Polyoxyethylene sorbitan fatty acid esters, often commercially known as "Tween", appear as yellow to amber viscous liquids, pastes or waxy solids (for example, Tween 20 is a liquid, Tween 60 is a paste, and Tween 85 is a viscous liquid) due to the different lengths of the fatty acid chain. They have no peculiar smell or a slight special odor. It is readily soluble in polar solvents such as water, ethanol and ethylene glycol, but poorly soluble in non-polar solvents such as mineral oil and vegetable oil.
